Plans for Feb. 13, 2024

Dec. 11, 2023

Dear colleagues,

I want to provide you with updates regarding the university’s plans for Feb. 13, 2024. Leading up to the one-year mark, community members will experience many different emotions. The planning underway strives to provide space and time for individualized reactions and experiences as we honor those we lost, those injured, and all impacted by the tragedy that occurred on our campus earlier this year.

At this time, plans are underway for a student-led day of action and an evening remembrance gathering on Feb. 13, 2024. Committees consisting of students, staff, and faculty are actively planning these university-wide commemoration events. Committee members are engaging interest groups for additional input as they work through the details.

As a reminder, there will be no classes held on Feb. 13, 2024, though the university will remain open to support students and our community. Meditative spaces will be set aside for people to spend time quietly reflecting. Counseling staff will be providing support to our community. Please note that we will be using outside counselors to ensure MSU staff can spend this day as they wish.

The Office for Resource and Support Coordination (ORSC) will provide guidance related to best practices for commemorative events and may be contacted if you have questions. For now, please share this information about the planning efforts with your units and departments. Additional details will be coming after the winter break.

My best,

Teresa K. Woodruff, Ph.D. (she/her/hers)
Interim President
MSU Research Foundation Professor
