Update on renovations to MSU Union, Berkey Hall

March 21, 2024

Dear MSU community,

We want to update you today on renovations beginning in the next two weeks at the MSU Union and Berkey Hall, the locations impacted by the events of Feb. 13, 2023. Design teams for each location worked closely with trauma-informed experts as part of the planning process. Importantly, directly impacted families and individuals were provided opportunities to review plans and offer feedback. As we continue to heal as a community, we hope the below information helps prepare you for the changes to come.

MSU Union
Beginning March 25, construction will start at the MSU Union in the former food court area, which has been closed since Feb. 13, 2023. Plans call for modernizing the area while maintaining a space that allows individuals to gather, engage and socialize. The area will remain walled off during construction; however, at times the demolition work could create unexpected noises that some may find disruptive.

The renovation should be complete by June. There will be no dining options available when the seating area opens, as planning is still underway.

Berkey Hall
On April 1, renovation of the first floor of the north wing, where classrooms have been closed since Feb. 13, 2023, will begin. Work will take place outside of business hours to limit any disruption to those working and learning in the building this semester. Starting in summer, the building will be closed for classes and events as work continues.

Plans include the reconfiguration of the impacted and surrounding classrooms into an open space for individuals to gather and engage, the addition of small-group meeting rooms, a reflection room, single-occupant accessible restrooms and a personal health room. Renovations are scheduled to be completed by fall 2024.

More information about both renovation projects can be found at the Spartans Together website. As always, please remember that resources are available to all members of our community via existing campus service providers. Find more information at the Office for Resource and Support Coordination’s website.
